Axillary brachial plexus block--an underused technique in the accident and emergency department.

OBJECTIVE To compare axillary brachial plexus block and Bier's block as methods of providing upper limb anaesthesia. METHODS Axillary brachial plexus or Bier's blocks were performed on all patients requiring upper limb anaesthesia in a three month period. For Bier's block, a single cuff tourniquet and 3 mg/kg 0.5% prilocaine were used. For axillary plexus block, 40 ml 1% lignocaine with adren...

Comparison of three different volumes of mepivacaine in axillary plexus block using multiple nerve stimulation.

BACKGROUND The multiple injection technique for axillary block, in which the four distal nerves of the plexus are located by a nerve stimulator and separately injected, has been shown to provide a high success rate and a short onset time. This randomized double-blind study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of three different volumes of mepivacaine 10 mg x ml(-1) in patients undergoing ...

Comparison of two neurostimulation techniques for axillary brachial plexus blockade.

This prospective, randomized, double-blind study compared two techniques of axillary brachial plexus block using a peripheral nerve stimulator. Both groups received initial musculocutaneous nerve block followed by either a single injection on median nerve stimulation (group 1) or a double injection divided between median and radial nerves (group 2). All 60 patients received a total of 30 ml of ...

Axillary brachial plexus block: method of choice?

The first brachial plexus block is said to have been performed by William Halsted in 1884 [32], soon after Roller [13] had demonstrated the local anaesthetic properties of cocaine. He injected the drug under direct vision, after exposing the plexus using infiltration anaesthesia. The first percutaneous blocks were performed independently in 1911 by Hirschel [11] and Kulenkampff [14], using the ...

Ultrasound-guided infraclavicular brachial plexus block.

BACKGROUND Peripheral nerve blocks are almost always performed as blind procedures. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of seeing individual nerves of the brachial plexus and directing the block needle to these nerves with real time imaging. METHODS Using ultrasound guidance, infraclavicular brachial plexus block was performed in 126 patients. Important aspects of this stand...
